TL;DR — Pets mostly unlock by server day, but Beast Cage still needs Town Center Lv. 18 and some later pets have catch requirements. Lion (Day 113) is the first real priority because its passive drops feed gear, Truegold, and charms. Plan one pet ahead: Lion needs Moose Lv. 15, and Mighty Bison needs Giant Rhino Lv. 30. Keep Gen 1 cheap, use pet food where it helps today, and save Taming Marks for event pet-days.
Most pet advice jumps straight to Lion. That advice is right, but it is not enough if your server is still sitting around Day 55 and Lion is weeks away.
This guide is for the actual decisions in between: which early pets deserve food, what to prepare before Lion, when Mighty Bison starts to matter, and when you should stop spending marks because a better pet is coming.
Before You Spend Pet Food
Pets are a long-term investment, not a quick power boost. The question is not just "which pet is strongest." Ask this first:
- What pets can I actually access right now?
- How long until better pets unlock?
- Should I invest heavily now or save resources?
- What's the return on investment over 30, 60, 90 days?
What pets can I actually access right now?
How long until better pets unlock?
Should I invest heavily now or save resources?
What's the return on investment over 30, 60, 90 days?
That last question matters most for F2P and low spenders. A pet can look good on the skill screen and still be a bad place to dump medallions if a stronger generation is close.
Kingdom Age: When Pets Actually Unlock
Pets unlock based on server age, not your personal Town Center level. Every player on a Day 100 server is looking at the same pet generation. A spender on a Day 50 server cannot rush Lion early, while an F2P account on an older server can catch later pets once the normal requirements are met. If you do not know your server age, check the Server Timeline Guide or use the Kingshot server timeline calculator before spending pet food.
These are the verified unlock days based on the in-game battlefield timeline:
| State Day | What Unlocks | Strategic Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0–54 | Nothing — Beast Cage is locked | Save pet food packs for later |
| Day 55 | Gray Wolf, Lynx, Bison (Gen 1) | Early utility available |
| Day 72 | Cheetah, Moose (Gen 2) | First combat-relevant pets |
| Day 113 | Lion, Grizzly Bear (Gen 3) | Major turning point — Lion drops Truegold |
| Day 197 | Giant Rhino, Mighty Bison (Gen 4) | Rally meta-defining unlocks |
| Day 281 | Great Moose, Alpha Black Panther (Gen 5) | Late-game refinement targets |
| Day 365 | Regal White Lion, Ironclad War Elephant (Gen 6) | Year-one milestone |
| Day 449 | Ironclad War Bear (Gen 7) | Late-game offensive debuff |
Server day is the gate, but it's not the only gate. Several later pets also require prior pets at specific levels before you can capture them. The two that catch players out:
- Lion requires Moose at Level 15
- Mighty Bison requires Giant Rhino at Level 30
If you skipped Moose to save resources, you're not going to be capturing Lion on Day 113 — you'll be sitting at Day 113 with Lion locked behind a Moose level. Same with Bison and Rhino. Plan one pet ahead.
Beast Cage itself also requires Town Center Lv. 18. On Day 55, if your TC isn't there yet, the cage stays locked even though Gen 1 pets are technically available.
Every Pet at a Glance
The quick lookup: each pet's active skill and whether it's worth your resources.
| Pet (Gen · Day) | Active skill | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Gray Wolf (G1 · 55) | Construction Aide — +5–15% build speed, 23h CD | Strong early utility |
| Lynx (G1 · 55) | Comforting Embrace — +35–60 stamina, 23h CD | Cap at Lv. 20 |
| Bison (G1 · 55) | Grip of the Titan — instant resource tile, 35h→15h CD | Niche; skip with a farm |
| Cheetah (G2 · 72) | Scent Mastery — finds 200–500 pet food, 23h CD | Pet-food factory pre-Lion |
| Moose (G2 · 72) | Horror Stare — −1.5–5% enemy health, 2h | Required Lv. 15 for Lion |
| Lion (G3 · 113) | Gift of the King — drops a Badland item (Forgehammers, Truegold, charm/artisan mats), 51h→23h CD | #1 priority, best return |
| Grizzly Bear (G3 · 113) | The Howler — +15–30% march speed, −1.5–5% enemy lethality, 2h | Flexible mobility + debuff |
| Giant Rhino (G4 · 197) | Wild Charge — +2.5–10% squad attack, 2h | Required Lv. 30 for Mighty Bison |
| Mighty Bison (G4 · 197) | Fearless Roar — +1,500–15,000 squad capacity, 2h | Best combat payoff when you start rallies |
| Great Moose (G5 · 281) | Rally Capacity — +60k–150k rally capacity, 2h | Rally-host's Mighty Bison |
| Alpha Black Panther (G5 · 281) | Squad Lethality — +2.5–10%, 2h | Universal offensive buff |
| Regal White Lion (G6 · 365) | Squad Defense — +2.5–10%, 2h | Defensive / garrison |
| Ironclad War Elephant (G6 · 365) | Squad Health — +2.5–10%, 2h | Raw survivability |
| Ironclad War Bear (G7 · 449) | Enemy Defense — −2.5–10%, 2h | Offensive; roster ceiling |
The active skill is what fires when you deploy the pet. Separately, every pet can add account-wide refinement stats. That is why even a pet whose active skill is not exciting can still matter later. Higher-generation pets have much higher stat caps, so late pets are usually better homes for serious refinement.
What To Upgrade By Server Age
Use this as your spending order as the server opens each generation.
Day 55–71: Keep Gen 1 Cheap
Available pets: Gray Wolf, Lynx, Bison
Gen 1 pets are useful, but they are not where your account wins long-term. Get them working, then start saving for the pets that actually change your account.
What I would do at this stage:
| Pet | Investment Level | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Gray Wolf | Level 15–20 | Construction Aide is a 5-min, 23-hour-cooldown active — 5% to 15% boost depending on skill level. Helpful early when builds are short, less helpful later. |
| Bison | Level 15–20 | Grip of the Titan instant-completes a single gather. Stays mildly useful long-term, but not worth overinvesting. |
| Lynx | Level 20 hard cap | Comforting Embrace restores ~40 stamina per daily use. That exactly covers your 4 Pet Adventures. Anything more is wasted. |
Gray Wolf is the easiest one to justify early because build speed always feels good. Still, I would stop around Level 15–20 unless you are spending. Lynx to Level 20 is clean because it covers your daily Pet Adventures. Bison is fine for convenience and event gathering, but farm accounts make it much less important.
Where Resources Actually Pay Off
Some pet upgrades feel good immediately. Others pay you back for months. I would separate them like this:
Lion (Gen 3, Day 113)
- Investment: Pet food + advancement materials
- Return: High-tier upgrade materials for gear, Truegold, and charms roughly every 1–2 days
- Timeline: Compounds over months
- Verdict: Best long-term pet investment
Mighty Bison (Gen 4, Day 197)
- Investment: Pet food + advancement materials (plus Rhino at Level 30 to unlock)
- Return: +15,000 Squad Capacity in rallies → more troops → more kills → better rewards
- Timeline: Immediate in battles
- Verdict: Best combat payoff when you're the one starting the rally
Gray Wolf (Gen 1, Day 55)
- Investment: Pet food + advancement materials
- Return: 5–15% construction speed for a 5-minute window once every 23 hours
- Timeline: Diminishes as builds get longer
- Verdict: Useful early, weak long-term
Pet Refinement: What Actually Matters
Refinement is a completely separate system from leveling. Leveling uses Pet Food. Refinement uses Taming Marks and adds bonuses to specific troop types — Infantry Health, Archer Lethality, Cavalry Health, and so on. For how Health and Lethality compare in actual combat, use the combat stats guide alongside this section.
Every pet has 6 secondary buffs: Health and Lethality for Infantry, Cavalry, and Archer. They unlock at Pet Level 10 and start at Common quality. Refining raises their percentage values, and once a buff hits the cap for its current tier, it promotes to the next tier and locks in permanently. Future bad rolls can still move the number around inside that tier, but they cannot knock it back to the previous tier.
The 6 quality tiers
Older copies of pet advice may still list the tier ladder as Gray → Green → Blue → Purple → Gold. That is outdated. The current in-game ladder is:
Common → Uncommon → Rare → Epic → Mythic → Legendary
Six tiers, not five. Mythic now sits between Epic and Legendary.
Pet Level controls the maximum tier you can reach
Your refinement quality is capped by the pet's level, not just by how lucky your rolls are. The in-game Refining Rules screen shows this progression:
| Pet Level | Maximum Refinement Quality |
|---|---|
| Level 10 | Common |
| Level 20 | Uncommon |
| Level 30 | Rare |
| Level 40 | Epic |
| Level 50 | Mythic |
| Level 50 | Legendary |
Yes, Mythic and Legendary both show Level 50 on the in-game screen. The game does not clearly explain the extra jump from Mythic into Legendary, so treat Mythic as the realistic stopping point unless you are spending hard on marks.
Per-pet stat caps by tier
Each buff has a maximum value inside each tier. Higher-generation pets have higher caps, which is why a Mythic buff on Mighty Bison is worth far more than the same tier on Gray Wolf. Same refinement tier, very different payout.
| Pet | Epic Cap | Mythic Cap | Legendary Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gray Wolf | 4.69% | 6.70% | 8.70% |
| Lynx / Bison | 9.39% | 13.41% | 17.40% |
| Cheetah / Moose | 14.08% | 20.11% | 26.00% |
| Lion / Grizzly Bear | 20.34% | 29.05% | 38.00% |
| Giant Rhino / Mighty Bison | 31.28% | 44.69% | 58.00% |
| Great Moose / Alpha Black Panther | 34.41% | 49.16% | 63.90% |
| Regal White Lion / Ironclad War Elephant / Ironclad War Bear | 40.67% | 58.10% | 75.50% |
How to read this: If your Lion's Archer Lethality is sitting at 18%, you need to keep refining until it hits 20.34% to lock in Epic. Once it locks, the buff can drop within the Epic range on bad rolls, but it'll never fall back below 20.34%. To push it further toward Mythic (29.05%), Lion needs to be at Pet Level 50.
How refining works in practice
- Spend a Taming Mark to roll
- The game randomly adjusts your 6 secondary buffs up or down
- If the net power change is positive, accept the refine
- If it's negative, reroll (which costs another mark)
- Once a buff hits the cap for its current tier, that tier locks in permanently
The screen will sometimes show a net-negative refine that promotes one buff to the next tier. That is usually worth accepting. A locked tier is permanent; the temporary drops on other buffs can be fixed later.
Epic is a reasonable target once the pet reaches Level 40. Mythic requires Level 50 and a much larger mark pile. Legendary is whale territory. For most players, the bigger mistake is forcing old pets upward after better generations unlock. A Common Mighty Bison can give more raw stat than a Mythic Gray Wolf.
Refinement strategy by tier
| Tier transition | Taming Mark to use | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Common → Uncommon | Common Marks | Cheap gains, generous success rate |
| Uncommon → Rare | Common Marks | Still reasonable, save Advanced for later |
| Rare → Epic | Advanced Marks | Success rate drops, better marks pay off |
| Epic → Mythic | Advanced Marks + patience | Significant resource sink |
| Mythic → Legendary | Advanced Marks + a lot of luck | Diminishing returns, consider another pet |
Stat stacking: Pet refinement stats stack additively. If Wolf gives +2% Archer Lethality and Lion gives +4%, you have +6% total. Every developed pet contributes at the same time.
For dungeon-specific pet stats and Taming Mark payoff, especially where pets matter more than account-wide stats, see the Forest of Life section in the Mystic Trial guide.
Time Your Marks With Events
Do not refine the moment you have marks. Refine on event pet-days so the same marks give you stats and event points at the same time.
The events that reliably include a pet-day:
- KvK / Kingdom of Power prep — the big one
- Strongest Governor
- Brawl
The resource that matters for event scoring is not pet food. It is marks.
- Leveling with Pet Food scores almost nothing. Food is cheap and the point values are tiny. Level whenever you like — don't hoard food for events.
- Refining with Taming Marks is what scores real points. Marks are the scarce resource and the high-value event currency. Hoard marks, not food.
For F2P and low spenders, the routine is simple:
- Level pets freely as you go — food isn't worth saving.
- Bank Taming Marks (especially Advanced Marks) for weeks at a time.
- On the next KvK-prep pet-day, dump them. You collect the stat boost and the event placement in one shot.
The reroll-fishing trick: A refine only scores points when you accept it. On higher-tier pets, where many rolls come out net-negative, preview the roll and only commit the ones you actually want. You can spend an Advanced Mark, then use Common Marks to hunt for acceptable follow-up rolls. It is tedious, but it lets a small mark stockpile go further during KvK prep.
The medallion bottleneck. Pet Food and Taming Marks aren't the only gates. Advancing a pet past its early levels eventually requires promotion medallions, and those are the real F2P chokepoint — far scarcer than food. This is why "level everything to the cap" isn't realistic for non-spenders: you'll hit the medallion wall and have to choose. When you do, medallions go to Lion first, every time.
The Lynx Question: Why Level 20 is the Hard Cap
Lynx is one of the few early pets with a clean stopping point. The math is simple:
- Lynx's Comforting Embrace restores 35–60 stamina per use (scales with skill level)
- At Pet Level 20, the skill hits Level 2 and restores roughly 40 stamina
- Cooldown: 23 hours — one cast per day, basically
- Pet Adventures cost 10 stamina each
- You can run 4 Pet Adventures daily
- 4 × 10 = 40 stamina needed
One Level-20 Lynx cast covers your daily adventures exactly.
Pushing Lynx past Level 20 generates excess stamina with nowhere to spend it. Stamina from other sources (events, packs) should be banked for Terror Hunts and special events instead.
Common Scenarios
"I just hit Day 55. What do I do?"
Get Gray Wolf and Bison to Level 15–20. Get Lynx to exactly 20. Then turn your focus to Day 72 prep — when Cheetah and Moose unlock, Moose at Level 15 is a hard requirement to capture Lion on Day 113. Don't treat her as optional.
"Lion just unlocked and my Cheetah is Level 35. Should I switch?"
Yes, immediately — assuming Lion is actually capturable (you got Moose to 15). Lion's passive item generation outvalues Cheetah's pet food at any level comparison. Every day you delay Lion is lost drops.
"I'm F2P but want to be competitive in rallies. Mighty Bison or Lion?"
Lion first. Here's why: Lion's drops feed Hero Gear and Governor Charms, both of which compound your overall combat power across every march. Mighty Bison matters more for players who already have strong gear and just need more troops in the fight. If you lead rallies regularly though, Bison gets equal priority — that +15,000 squad cap is a direct DPS multiplier. Just remember Bison requires Giant Rhino at Level 30 to unlock. For broader no-spend resource planning, pair this with the F2P Guide.
"Should I refine Gen 1 pets at all?"
Minimally. Get them to Uncommon tier for cheap stat boosts (Common Taming Marks), then save everything for Gen 3–4 pets where the same marks give 3–5x the stats.
"Do my pets help when I join someone else's rally?"
Not the active skills. Like other buffs and stats, a pet's skill applies to the whole rally only when it's used by the rally starter — so when you join, it's the starter's Lion, Rhino, Bison, and Moose that fire, not yours. What still counts is your account-wide refinement stats: those boost your troops in every fight no matter who starts. And you won't always be joining — you're the starter in Swordland Showdown, Alliance Championship, and your own rallies — so leveling pets stays worthwhile.
"I run a farm account — does that change my pet order?"
Slightly. The Bison's instant-gather and the Gray Wolf's construction speed both lose value once a farm account is feeding you resources and your Truegold-era builds slow to a crawl anyway (past TC 30, the trickle of Truegold makes most builds bottleneck on materials, not workers). If you gather reliably on a farm, it's fine to slide Bison down your priority list and put that pet food toward stamina (Lynx) or simply bank it for Lion. Don't drop Bison entirely — the gather skill still has event uses — just stop treating it as a top-three pick.
"Why is my Pet Power rank stuck at C or D? I'm F2P."
Nothing's broken on your account — Pet Power is the one ranking F2P essentially can't fix. In most categories (tech, troops, heroes) consistent daily play closes most of the gap with low and mid spenders. Pet Power doesn't work that way: the top scores are set by players pouring large volumes of Advanced Taming Marks out of the gem shop, and there's no no-spend substitute for that volume.
Two things to keep in perspective:
- The grade is benchmarked brutally. A low letter does not always mean your account is behind the people around you. If your pet choices are sensible and your marks are going into events, do not let the letter bait you into bad spending.
- It self-corrects as the server ages. Just like Tech ranks jump when the War Academy opens (~Day 220), Pet ranks firm up as later-generation pets unlock for everyone.
Do your dailies, bank marks for events, prioritize Lion, and ignore the letter grade.
Quick Decision Flowchart
What should I upgrade right now?
- Is Lion available and is Moose at 15+? → Upgrade Lion
- Lion unlocked on the server day but Moose is below 15? → Push Moose to 15 immediately, then start Lion
- No Lion yet but Cheetah available? → Upgrade Cheetah to 25–30 + Moose to 15, then bank
- Only Gen 1 available? → Get to Level 15–20, then save everything
- Day 197+ and you lead rallies? → Rhino to 30 to unlock Bison, then split focus across Lion + Bison + Rhino
The Three Rules
If you forget everything else in this guide, remember these:
Rule 1: Respect the timeline, but plan one pet ahead. Server day is the floor for unlocks, not the whole story. Lion needs Moose at 15. Mighty Bison needs Rhino at 30. Don't skip "boring" pets — they're gatekeepers for the good ones.
Rule 2: Lion is non-negotiable. Once Lion is actually capturable, it becomes your #1 pet food sink regardless of playstyle. The passive item generation has no equal.
Rule 3: Playstyle determines everything else.
- Rally leaders → Rhino to 30 (for Bison unlock), then Bison + keep pushing Rhino
- Rally joiners → Lion focus; refinement stats help you in any rally, and your active skills shine in events you start (Swordland Showdown, Alliance Championship)
- F2P → Lion forever, combat pets are luxury picks
The pet system rewards patience. Do not chase every small power bump. Build the pets that keep paying you back.
If your kingdom has reached the Master system at Day 113, pair this with the Master Academy Guide. Pets and Masters both reward long-term resource planning, and Pan/Valora upgrades compound the same daily Forgehammer and Truegold goals Lion is already feeding.
