Quick Summary: Lethality is the most misunderstood stat in Kingshot. It multiplies directly with Attack to determine kills — meaning both stats matter equally. This guide breaks down how all combat stats interact, which ones have diminishing returns, and the optimal stat priority for every game mode.
Most Kingshot guides say "Lethality is important" without explaining WHY or HOW it compares to other combat stats. This guide provides the actual math behind how damage works, so you can make informed investment decisions instead of blindly following tier lists.
The Five Core Combat Stats
| Stat | What It Does | Source | Scalability | |------|-------------|--------|------------| | Attack (ATK) | Increases damage dealt per hit | Gear, research, heroes | Linear | | Defense (DEF) | Reduces incoming damage per hit | Gear, research, charms | Diminishing | | Health (HP) | Total damage a troop can absorb | Charms, research, pets | Linear | | Lethality | Multiplies kill output alongside ATK | Gear, research, widgets | Multiplicative | | March Speed | Movement speed on the map | Research, heroes, items | Situational |
How Damage Actually Works
The combat damage formula in Kingshot follows this simplified model:
What this means in practice:
- Troop count scales with the square root — doubling your troops does NOT double your damage. 10,000 troops → √10,000 = 100. 20,000 troops → √20,000 = 144, not 200.
- ATK and Lethality multiply together in the numerator — they contribute equally to kill output.
- Enemy DEF and Enemy HP multiply together in the denominator — both must be overcome.
- SkillMod (hero and troop skills) has the largest single influence on damage output. Your main and joiner hero skill choices matter more than any individual stat.
This formula is simplified. The actual in-game calculation involves hidden modifiers, skill interactions, and troop-type advantages. These numbers approximate behavior observed through testing but are not exact server-side values.
ATK vs Lethality: Why Lethality Is the Better Investment
Because ATK and Lethality multiply together, they contribute equally to your kill output — a 10% increase in either one produces the same damage gain in isolation.
So why focus on Lethality?
The answer is simple: most players naturally accumulate far more ATK than Lethality through normal progression. Gear, research, and hero skills all heavily reward ATK, while Lethality sources are fewer and harder to stack.
When two stats multiply together, boosting the lower one always gives a bigger relative gain. If your ATK is 500% and your Lethality is 80%, a +20% increase to Lethality is worth more than a +20% increase to ATK — because 80 → 100 is a 25% relative jump, while 500 → 520 is only a 4% relative jump.
Result: Prioritize Lethality not because it's mechanically superior to ATK, but because it's almost always the underdeveloped side of the multiply — which means every point has more room to grow.
Once your Lethality catches up to a similar level as your ATK, it makes sense to balance investment between both.
Stat Priority by Game Mode
Different modes prioritize different stats:
| Game Mode | #1 | #2 | #3 | #4 | Why | |-----------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Bear Hunt | Lethality | ATK | March Speed | — | Pure DPS race, no defense needed | | Rally Hosting | Lethality | ATK | HP | DEF | Kill speed determines rally success | | Rally Joining | ATK | Lethality | — | — | Only troops + 1st hero skill contribute | | KvK Open Field | HP | Lethality | ATK | DEF | Survival first, then kill speed | | Garrison Defense | HP | DEF | ATK | Lethality | Survive the rally, outlast attackers | | Arena PvP | Lethality | ATK | HP | DEF | Auto-battle — burst kills win | | Mystic Trial | Varies by dungeon | — | — | — | See individual dungeon guides |
Defense: Diminishing Returns
Defense has a critical property that other stats don't: diminishing returns at high values.
| DEF Level | Damage Reduction | Marginal Gain |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | 0% reduction | — |
| +50% | ~33% reduction | High (★★★★★) |
| +100% | ~50% reduction | Good (★★★★☆) |
| +200% | ~67% reduction | Moderate (★★★☆☆) |
| +300% | ~75% reduction | Low (★★☆☆☆) |
| +500% | ~83% reduction | Minimal (★☆☆☆☆) |
Values are approximate based on observed combat behavior
Practical implication: Going from 0% to +100% DEF is huge (halves incoming damage). Going from +300% to +400% DEF barely changes anything. Once DEF hits ~200%, shift further investment to HP instead.
HP vs DEF: When to Invest
Understanding the HP-DEF relationship saves you from misallocating stats:
Invest in DEF when:
- Current DEF is below ~200% (still in the high-ROI range)
- You're building for garrison defense
- You're in Crystal Cave (charm DEF matters)
Invest in HP when:
- DEF is already above ~200% (diminishing returns)
- You're building for open-field PvP (need to survive burst)
- You want a universal improvement (HP has no diminishing returns)
Rule of thumb: Below 200% DEF, prioritize DEF over HP. Above 200% DEF, prioritize HP.
Stat Sources & Where to Get Them
| Stat | #1 Source | #2 Source | #3 Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATK | Hero Gear | Research | Hero Skills |
| DEF | Research | Governor Charms | Hero Gear |
| HP | Governor Charms | Research | Pets |
| Lethality | Hero Gear | Research | Widgets |
| March Speed | Research | Heroes (passive) | Items (temporary) |
Key insight: Lethality is hardest to get because fewer systems provide it. Since ATK sources are plentiful and Lethality sources are scarce, most players end up Lethality-starved — which is exactly why investing in it produces outsized returns.
Where Governor Charm materials come from: Charms drive your HP and DEF totals, so charm farming is a direct survivability multiplier. The single biggest source of charm materials is Eternity's Reach — a top 10 finish there produces 350,000+ copper ore per match, which converts directly into Governor Charm progression.
Practical Applications
Bear Hunt Stat Optimization
For Bear Hunt specifically:
- Stack Lethality on gear, research, and hero widgets
- ATK is equally valuable — balance both when possible
- DEF and HP are irrelevant (bear doesn't fight back)
- March Speed helps you rejoin rallies faster
See our Bear Hunt Guide for specific hero and formation recommendations.
KvK Stat Balance
For KvK open-field combat:
- Balance HP and DEF for survival (HP > DEF if DEF is above 200%)
- Lethality and ATK together determine how many troops you kill per exchange
- March Speed matters for reinforcement timing
See our KvK Preparation Playbook for complete KvK strategy.
Common Lethality Mistakes
These mistakes are extremely common and cost players significant power:
| Mistake | Why It Hurts | Correct Approach | |---------|-------------|------------------| | Ignoring Lethality because ATK is already high | ATK and Lethality multiply together — the lower stat always gives a bigger return on investment | Check which is lower and invest there first | | Ignoring Lethality on gear for HP/DEF | Survivability matters, but killing nothing means you lose regardless | Balance: Lethality gear for offense, HP charms for survival | | Treating Lethality as "optional" | Players who skip Lethality lose kill races in Bear Hunt and KvK decisively | Treat Lethality as a primary combat investment alongside ATK | | Overinvesting DEF above 200% | Diminishing returns above 200% DEF means extra DEF has tiny impact | Once DEF exceeds 200%, redirect investment to HP | | Equipping the same gear for all modes | Bear Hunt needs Lethality-heavy gear; Garrison needs HP/DEF | Swap gear sets based on the game mode |
Lethality in Practice: Real Combat Scenarios
Understanding formulas is one thing — seeing how it plays out is another. Here are two illustrative examples:
Scenario: Two players join the same Bear Hunt rally with equal troop counts and equal ATK. Player A has invested in more ATK; Player B has invested the same resources into Lethality instead.
Player A — Extra ATK investment:
- ATK: 520% | Lethality: 80%
- The +20% ATK boost is a ~4% relative gain on the ATK side of the multiply
Player B — Same resources into Lethality:
- ATK: 500% | Lethality: 100%
- The +20% Lethality boost is a 25% relative gain on the Lethality side of the multiply
Result: Player B scores significantly higher because their Lethality was the underdeveloped stat — boosting the lower multiplier produces a much larger overall damage increase than boosting the already-high one.
The takeaway: ATK and Lethality are mechanically equal. The reason to focus Lethality is that it's almost always the lower number, so it has more room to grow.
Scenario: Two players both have 200% DEF. One invests next in DEF, one in HP.
Player A — Pushes DEF to 350%:
- Damage Reduction improves from ~67% to ~78% — a marginal 11% difference
- Invested heavily for a small survival gain
Player B — Pushes HP by 30% instead:
- Total HP pool increases 30% linearly — directly proportional to how long they survive
- HP has no diminishing returns, so every point invested gives the same return
Result: Player B survives longer in open-field combat because HP scaled better than stacking DEF beyond 200%.
How to Check and Track Your Stats
Knowing your actual stat numbers is essential to making informed investment decisions.
| Stat Location | How to Access |
|---|---|
| Governor Stats | Tap your avatar → Governor Info → Combat Stats tab |
| Hero Contribution | Tap each hero → view their skill/passive bonuses |
| Research Bonuses | Academy → Research → tap any completed node |
| Gear Stats | Gear → tap equipped item → shows individual stat contributions |
| Widget Bonuses | Hero screen → Widget tab → shows current widget stat bonus |
| Alliance Tech Bonuses | Alliance → Technology → shows combat bonuses your alliance provides |
Tip: Add up bonuses from all sources to estimate your true Lethality total. The Governor Info screen shows your combined stat after all sources are added.
Track your Lethality monthly. As you upgrade gear, research, and widgets, your Lethality % should trend upward. If it hasn't changed in weeks, identify which source (gear, research, widgets) is lagging behind.
What to Remember
- ATK and Lethality multiply together — they contribute equally to kill output
- Lethality is almost always the lower stat — which means investing in it gives a bigger relative gain than more ATK
- Defense has diminishing returns above ~200% — shift to HP after that threshold
- Lethality is the scarcest stat — fewer sources means most players are Lethality-starved
- Game mode determines priority order — Bear Hunt wants Lethality + ATK, garrison wants HP/DEF
- HP has no diminishing returns — it's the safest universal investment
